Final proposals will now be drawn up for the £5.1 million redevelopment of the Forest Recreation Ground following public consultation with local residents.
The site in Radford is due to benefit from new entrances, new changing facilities, a playground and a community garden, among other upgrades.
The work is being funded by the city council, which is providing £2 million. The remaining £3.1 million is lottery funding.
Ruth Greenberg, chief officer of local community charity Partnership Council, said: "We want the Forest to be a place that local people can enjoy every day, as well as being a great destination for the whole city to visit."
Final proposals are to be submitted by autumn 2010.
