Nottingham's public realm is to be enhanced, after the Government agreed to help replace 29,000 streetlights over 25 years.

To begin with, Nottingham City Council will replace 25,000 streetlights in the next five years. The remainder wiull follow over the next 20 years.

All 29,000 will have new white light lanterns, while 10,000 existing columns will be retained.

All columns will be fitted with technology to help the council achieve significant energy savings over future years. Scottish and Southern Energy subsidiary Tay Valley Lighting won the 25-year private finance initiative installation and maintenance contract.

Cllr Jane Urquhart, Nottingham City Council's portfolio holder for transport and area working, said: “This is very good news indeed especially as it comes at a time when there is some uncertainty surrounding some major capital projects in the region. Nottingham literally has a brighter future, but also a safer and more sustainable one."
